Welcome to Olathe
Olathe, Kansas is and always has been a rapidly growing town. It is estimated to have just a little over 135,000 in population. Olathe was founded in 1857 by Dr. John T. Barton. Dr. Barton rode to the center of what is now Johnson County and staked out two quarter sections of land as the town site. It was during his travels is how he came up with the name. He described his ride through the prairie, that was covered in verbena and other wild flowers, as beautiful and the town should be named as such. It was then Dr. Barton asked a Shawnee Indian interpreter how to say “Beautiful” in his native language. The interpreter responded "Olathe".
Olathe is located just twenty miles southwest of downtown Kansas City, along the historic Oregon-California and Santa Fe Trails. Whether you live here or just visiting, make sure you check out our very diverse, vibrant, and historic downtown.
